How is the rapidly changing job market affecting the relevance of traditional educational programs in schools and universities? To answer this question and understand the challenges facing education and training professionals, we interviewed Jeff Maggioncalda, CEO of the e-learning platform Coursera.

In its 2023 Future of Work and Jobs Report , published last May, the World Economic Forum revealed that nearly a quarter of jobs (23%) worldwide will be transformed over the next five years to accommodate the rise of new technologies such as AI. Across the 45 economies analyzed, some 69 million new jobs are expected to be created and 83 million lost.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the world of work has become increasingly hybrid , facing new challenges. At the same time, these changes mean that the skills in demand today will no longer be those in demand tomorrow. This means that students must learn continuously, constantly renew their skills, but also develop more general skills to cope with a changing world.

Lifelong learning is now a necessity and should extend to the workplace, helping people to constantly adapt to technological change. The majority of learning will take place online  ; Even on-campus programs will have a substantial online component. The one-size-fits-all model will give way to a much more adaptive and personalized learning experience that will enable everyone, everywhere, to embrace lifelong learning.

So technology and distance learning have significantly changed the way schools and universities deliver their programs?

Remote work, online learning, and now ChatGPT have leveled the playing field. Now, with generative AI, anyone, anywhere can get the personalized support they need to succeed in online learning programs and advance their careers. We must ensure this tool is widely available to learners at a very low cost, or the learning gap between those who are online and those who are not will widen even further. With widespread access and thoughtful integration, we can open up a whole new world of educational and economic opportunities for learners on an unprecedented global scale.

In a world where students now have access to a powerful tool like ChatGPT, this presents both challenges and opportunities for campuses. Banning it is not the solution since this tool will be widely used in the workplace. We recommend that universities set clear expectations with students and implement policies that specify when and where AI tools can be used. Students should also assign any work generated by AI tools. At Coursera, we plan to integrate generative AI into our product to help students write and think better without completely outsourcing their writing or thinking. We’re also working on tools that make it easier and faster for educators to create online content.
